Dear Mr Sigmund Friend,

Last week, a boy in my class told me that he liked me very much. I felt really flattered(荣幸的), but I don’t think of him as my boyfriend. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, and I don’t like him in that way. What should I do?

Sandy

Dear Sandy,

Don’t worry. It is a problem that many girls have had. If you don’t want to harm your friendship, you can tell him that your parents have set a dating age that you have not reached yet. You could tell him that both of you should let your studies come first. If he replies by asking if you like him, tell him that you are not ready to have a boyfriend. For now, you like him as a friend but not as a boyfriend. Maybe when you get a little older, you can be more than just friends.

Mr Sigmund Friend

B

One morning, a blind boy sat beside a building with a hat by his feet. He held a sign which said, “I am blind. Please help me.”

There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were going. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way.” What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can' t see it. ”

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beautiful day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.

There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Treasure what you have. Someone else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help. The second is: Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way.

I asked him if he had talked to his dad about it yet. He told me that his father thought those coaches did not understand the power of a dream. He told him that if he truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop him except one thing — his own attitude. He told him again, “If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.”

Lizzie was born in 1842. She lived in a small house on a farm with her parents and two brothers. Her father and older brother worked in the fields picking cotton, and her mother and younger brother worked in the vegetable garden. Lizzie worked in the farmer’s house.

The farmer didn’t like Lizzie’s older brother and gave him the hardest jobs. Lizzie was afraid that one day the farmer might hurt her brother.

Many slaves(奴隶) tried to run away to the free states. But most were caught by slave catchers or tracking dogs. However some slaves found clever ways to escape(逃跑). Lizzie was one of them.

Every day she went to the farmer’s house, where she made beautiful clothes for the farmer’s daughters. She was allowed to keep small pieces of left-over materials, and she stitched() these together into small patterns. Then she stitched the small patterns together to make a quilt(被子). The patterns all had names such as ‘Flying Geese’, ‘Bear’s Paw’, or ‘Nine Patch’.

That quilt was really a map. Lizzie hung it on the clothes line outside the house, and her brother and other slaves saw Lizzie’s quilt with many messages and knew which way to go.

They also knew that Lizzie’s cabin was a “safety house” because a quilt with a sky blue square in the middle meant “safety house”. At each safe house, they were hidden and given food. With the quilt’s help, they knew the way to get to the next safe house until they got to the free states in the north.

71.How many people were there in Lizzie’s family?

72.Why did Lizzie decide to help her older brother?

Some students cheat because they are busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending any time studying. Other students might feel that they can’t pass the test without cheating. If a student thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test, he/she had better talk with the teacher and parents. Talking about these problems and working them out will help them feel better than cheating.

If a student gets caught cheating, there are lots of punishments(惩罚) waiting for him/her. The teacher may give him/her a “zero” score on the test, call his or her parents. What’s worse, parents and teachers feel disappointed(失望). A parent may worry that he/she is not an honest person and a teacher might watch him/her more closely next time .

There are plenty of reasons why a kid shouldn’t cheat, but some students have already cheated. If that’s you, it’s never too late to stop cheating. Cheating can become a habit, but a student is always able to act better and make better choices. It might help to talk the problem over with a parent, teacher, or friend.
